Fractures are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries, and their healing process is influenced by a range of factors including the type of fracture, the age and overall health of the patient, and adherence to prescribed treatment protocols (Ogbonna et al., 2023). In recent years, nurse-led patient education has gained attention as a key factor in improving health outcomes, including in the management of fractures. By providing patients with the necessary knowledge about fracture care, rehabilitation exercises, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications, nurses can empower patients to take an active role in their recovery (Okafor et al., 2024). Education can also address misconceptions, reduce anxiety, and enhance adherence to treatment protocols, all of which contribute to better healing outcomes.
In Zamfara State, where access to orthopedic care is limited and there is a relatively high incidence of fractures, the role of nurses in educating patients about the healing process could be pivotal in improving recovery outcomes. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of nurse-led education on fracture healing in this region. This study seeks to explore how nurse-led patient education influences fracture healing outcomes in Zamfara State hospitals, including aspects such as pain management, mobility, and the prevention of complications like nonunion or malunion.
Fracture healing is often delayed or complicated by factors such as poor patient adherence to treatment, inadequate knowledge about the healing process, and insufficient post-discharge care (Olumide et al., 2024). Nurses in Zamfara State hospitals play a central role in patient education but there is limited evidence on how these educational interventions directly impact fracture healing outcomes. The effectiveness of nurse-led education in reducing complications, enhancing recovery time, and improving patient satisfaction with the healing process remains understudied. This research aims to address this gap by evaluating the effect of nurse-led patient education on fracture healing outcomes.
The study will focus on patients who have sustained fractures and are receiving care in hospitals in Zamfara State. The study’s limitations include possible biases related to self-reported data on patient satisfaction and the variation in the quality of patient education provided by different nurses.
