Background of the Study

Fractures are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries, and their healing process is influenced by a range of factors including the type of fracture, the age and overall health of the patient, and adherence to prescribed treatment protocols (Ogbonna et al., 2023). In recent years, nurse-led patient education has gained attention as a key factor in improving health outcomes, including in the management of fractures. By providing patients with the necessary knowledge about fracture care, rehabilitation exercises, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications, nurses can empower patients to take an active role in their recovery (Okafor et al., 2024). Education can also address misconceptions, reduce anxiety, and enhance adherence to treatment protocols, all of which contribute to better healing outcomes.

In Zamfara State, where access to orthopedic care is limited and there is a relatively high incidence of fractures, the role of nurses in educating patients about the healing process could be pivotal in improving recovery outcomes. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of nurse-led education on fracture healing in this region. This study seeks to explore how nurse-led patient education influences fracture healing outcomes in Zamfara State hospitals, including aspects such as pain management, mobility, and the prevention of complications like nonunion or malunion.

Statement of the Problem

Fracture healing is often delayed or complicated by factors such as poor patient adherence to treatment, inadequate knowledge about the healing process, and insufficient post-discharge care (Olumide et al., 2024). Nurses in Zamfara State hospitals play a central role in patient education but there is limited evidence on how these educational interventions directly impact fracture healing outcomes. The effectiveness of nurse-led education in reducing complications, enhancing recovery time, and improving patient satisfaction with the healing process remains understudied. This research aims to address this gap by evaluating the effect of nurse-led patient education on fracture healing outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the effect of nurse-led patient education on fracture healing outcomes in Zamfara State hospitals.
  2. To assess the specific aspects of fracture healing (e.g., pain management, mobility, complication prevention) that are most impacted by patient education.
  3. To evaluate patient satisfaction with nurse-led education and its perceived impact on their recovery.

Research Questions

  1. What is the effect of nurse-led patient education on fracture healing outcomes in Zamfara State hospitals?
  2. Which aspects of fracture healing are most improved by nurse-led patient education?
  3. How do patients perceive the role of education in their fracture recovery?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led patient education significantly improves fracture healing outcomes in Zamfara State hospitals.
  2. Patient education provided by nurses reduces the incidence of complications such as nonunion and malunion in fracture patients.
  3. Patients who receive nurse-led education report higher satisfaction with the fracture healing process compared to those who do not.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on patients who have sustained fractures and are receiving care in hospitals in Zamfara State. The study’s limitations include possible biases related to self-reported data on patient satisfaction and the variation in the quality of patient education provided by different nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nurse-Led Patient Education: Educational activities and interventions initiated and provided by nurses to improve patients' understanding of their medical condition and treatment.
  • Fracture Healing: The biological process of bone recovery following a fracture, which includes the formation of new bone tissue and the restoration of functionality.
  • Complications: Unfavorable outcomes during fracture healing, such as nonunion, malunion, or infection, which can hinder the recovery process.
